About Us

About Us

The Dixon Community was established in 1972 as a charity to support carers and the elderly community in the South of Glasgow.

We are home to Glasgow South Carers Centre and a multicultural opportunities daycare service for over 55s.

The Dixon Community empowers carers and older people to live fulfilling lives.

We achieve this by providing:

  • Person-centered care: We tailor our support to your individual needs and preferences.
  • Community-based services: We bring activities and support directly to you, helping you stay connected to your community.
  • Preventative and ongoing care: We offer a range of services to help you maintain your health and well-being, at every stage of life.

Our vision is for everyone, regardless of background, to enjoy a good quality of life. This includes:

  • Feeling healthy: We can connect you with resources to maintain your physical and mental health.
  • Staying connected: We offer social activities and befriending services to combat loneliness and isolation.
  • Being involved: We encourage participation in community events to keep you engaged and active.

By providing the right support, we help carers and older people thrive.

Our History

1891

Dixon Halls

The building that houses The Dixon Community, Dixon Halls started life as a burgh hall. The burghs of Crosshill and Govanhill shared the building, which was a gift from William Smith Dixon of Govan Iron Works (better known as Dixon Blazes). The building was re-named Dixon Halls when the burghs were annexed to Glasgow in 1891.

1972

The Dixon Community Established

In 1972, a lunch club for senior citizens began in one of the lower halls; that project has evolved and has become known as The Dixon Community,

The Dixon Community was established in 1972, a multicultural organisation providing care and support to older people and carers. There are 2 main projects:  Day Opportunities and Glasgow South East Carers Centre.

1992

Carers Centre Established

The organisation was linked with the Princess Royal Trust, now Carers Trust, as we were the flagship carers centre in Scotland in 1992 when the Trust was created. HRH the Princess Royal met with The Dixon Community General Manager to discuss the creation of her new charity to focus on carers.

We were given match funding from the Princess Royal Trust and the local authority to develop the first dedicated service for carers in Scotland under the Princess Royal Trust banner, based in Govanhill and managed by The Dixon Community.

We remain an active Network Partner of Carers Trust who operate as an umbrella organisation for Carers Centres affiliated to them.
